LAN:

Local Access Network (LAN) is a computer network that usually spans a relatively small area (for example, just your local business, home or farm) and makes it easy to share information between a router, computers, smartphones, printers and other connected devices within the LAN. Most often, a LAN is confined to a single room, building or group of buildings, however, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves.

Latency:

In satellite communications, it is the length of time that it takes the signal to travel from your home to the Viasat satellite, and then down to a ground-based gateway, which connects you to the internet. In “gaming” latency is the measurement of time delay it takes for the game server to recognize an action you take and react accordingly. Latency was an issue with earlier satellite internet services, but Viasat has overcome most of its effects with web acceleration technology. However, latency can still affect some online tasks, such as accessing a VPN and live-action gaming. Viasat’s average latency per customer feedback is 630ms (millisecond).

LAWN:

A local area wireless network (LAWN, sometimes referred to as WLAN, for wireless local area network) is one in which a mobile user can connect to a local area network (LAN) through a wireless (radio) connection. The IEEE 802.11 group of standards specify the technologies for transmitting data over wireless (WiFi) LANs. 802.11 standards use the Ethernet protocol and CSMA/CA (carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance) for path sharing and include an encryption method, the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) algorithm.

LCD:

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) refers to super-thin displays that are used in laptop computer screens and flat panel monitors. Smaller LCDs are used in handheld TVs and portable video game devices. The image on an LCD screen is created by sandwiching an electrically reactive substance between two electrodes. This color of this substance can be changed by increasing or reducing the electrical current. Since LCD screens are based on the principle of blocking light (rather than emitting it), they use up much less power than standard CRT (Cathode-Ray Tube) monitors.

Liberty Plans:

Viasat will occasionally open beams on its older Viasat-1 satellite to offer an alternative to slower dial-up and DSL in remote locations that may not be covered by the newer Viasat-2 satellite. Viasat offers three Liberty plans on this satellite with download speeds up to 12 Mbps. Viasat Liberty plans start at just $50 a month! Call us TODAY at 1-844-4GETNET (1-844-443-8638) to find our what plans and special offers are available in your area.

LinkedIn:

A business and employment-oriented social networking service that operates via the LinkedIn website and mobile app. It is mainly used for professional networking, including employers posting jobs and job seekers posting their CVs or resumes online. Through your LinkedIn profile you can manage your professional identity, build and engage with your professional network and colleagues and access knowledge, insights and employment opportunities. This is a free social media networking service available to use via the internet at the Official LinkedIn.com website or as a mobile app.

Localhost:

The local computer that a program is running on. For example, if you are running a web browser on your computer, your computer is considered to be the “localhost”. While this does not need to be specified when using a single computer, the localhost does need to be defined when running programs from multiple computers. A network administrator might use a local machine to start a web server on one system and use a remote access program on another. These programs would run from computers other than the localhost. Localhost is often used in web scripting languages like .PHP and .ASP when defining what server the code should run from or where a database is located.

LogMeIn:

LogMeIn, Inc. is a provider of software as a service and cloud-based remote connectivity services for collaboration, IT management and customer engagement. The company’s products such as GoToMyPC & LogMeIn give users and administrators access to remote computers so that they can work remotely. They also allow users to access their Mac or PC remotely from another device.
