Q: Does Viasat really offer UNLIMITED data plans?

A: Yes they really do! With the launch of the ViaSat-2 satellite in 2017, Viasat has been able to offer unlimited data plans in most areas nationwide. Viasat currently offers several unlimited data plans, including the Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum plans with download speeds up to 100 Mbps. These are true unlimited data plans. Which means that your speeds are no longer throttled at a preset data limit like HughesNet or cellular internet.

Q: Are there any data limits or restrictions?

A: With Viasat’s new unlimited data plans, there are no limits to how much data you can use during your monthly billing cycle. However, during high-traffic hours when the network is busy, Viasat may prioritize your unlimited plan data behind other Viasat low data usage customers after you exceed your data usage threshold. This may result in occasional slower speeds.

Q: How does this differ from the Liberty plan or previous Exede plans?

A: All Liberty plans and Exede plans use the older ViaSat-1 satellite and come with a preset data limit, similar to HughesNet and cellular internet. Once the monthly data limit is reached, speeds are throttled to under 5 Mpbs during the day and 1 Mbps in the evening. However, the unlimited plans available with the newer ViaSat-2 satellite are true unlimited data plans and do not throttle speeds at a preset limit, leading to faster speeds and better overall performance.

Q: Are the Unlimited plans the same as the Exede Freedom plans?

A: No. If you used more than 150 GB of data on an Exede Freedom plan, your speeds were slowed (up to 1-5 Mbps) all day, every day until the end of your monthly billing period. On the Viasat Unlimited Bronze, Silver and Gold and Platinum service plans, even after you exceed your data usage thresholds, your speeds will remain normal except when the network is congested. When you reach your service plan’s threshold and the network is busy, then you may be prioritized behind other customers, resulting in slower speeds. As soon as network congestion clears, your service returns to full speed.

Q: How much data usage is included in the unlimited data plans?

A: On an unlimited data plan there are no limits to how much data you can use during your monthly billing cycle. However, as previously mentioned, Viasat may prioritize your data behind other customers during hours of heavy traffic and network congestion.

Q: Does my data usage ever affect the speed of my internet service, especially if I use a lot of data?

A: With the unlimited data plans when the Viasat network traffic is not busy, your service speeds will not be affected. However, when the network is congested with high traffic use, and you have used more data than the amount provided in your service plan, Viasat may prioritize your data behind other low data usage customers, which will result in slower speeds. Webpages and videos may load slower than during periods of non-congestion.
